Make Custom Notifications?

    On the BP admin bar, you get a notification when you get a new friend request etc. Is it possible to make your own notifications? I am not talking about e-mail notifications here.
    Can you display a notification when someone mentions you in a post etc? As far as I know BuddyPress won’t notify you when you get mentioned. Thanks in advance.
