    @antonrsa

    I have just launched a pet project of mine http://mychatbox.me. It is a micro blogging community where members can create their own Chatbox (micro blog) on the network. For your status updates and micro blog posts, you are limited to 200 characters for posting and replies. No one else but the administrator and moderators of the micro blog can add top level content to it but members can reply.

    For a full list of features, check the home page. On members profiles eg: http://mychatbox.me/mychatbox/, users can add their location to their profile and it is displayed on a google map similar to buddypress profiles (not using gpress). Members can also add other social media channels they belong to and it will be displayed on their profile header with icons.

    I got the idea of My Chatbox from http://wpmu.org where @pollyplummer wrote a blog post http://wpmu.org/how-to-build-a-mini-twitter-site-with-buddypress-your-open-source-microblogging-platform/. Thanks @pollyplummer

    @hnla, @boonebgorges, @r-a-y, @nuprn1, @johnjamesjacoby and @dwenaus were the main contributors (not forgetting @apeatling) to the site with their plugins (some of them modified) and they helped quite allot by answering my silly questions on the BP forums. The site is not finished yet – hence the beta text on the logo. Still need to implement a mobile version as well…@modemlooper

    Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hey Anton, nice site. Going to join shortly. How did you manage to put a 200 character limit on the status updates?

    @thelandman Added a function to the _inc/global.js file and called the function on the files activity/entry.php, activity/post-form.php on the textarea in my child theme. There’s most likely better ways to do it, but it works. It displays how many characters you have left and stops you from entering when you have reached 200 chars.

    @antonrsa, simple but effective solution. I tried to disable java to see if I could get around it but a user without java gets redirected to a “javascript disabled” page. Nice.

    @thelandman – Yep, thought about that. Really not the best solution but it works.
