    http://plugins.svn.wordpress.org/bp-album/branches/foxly/0.1.9.1/bp-album-alpha-2010-06-01.zip

Here’s the latest version of BP Album+ for you guys to download and test. It’s a massive upgrade from the previous versions we’ve posted, and includes things like adaptive image caching and activity post item grouping.

We want you to download this version and tell us what you think, and if it causes problems on your server, please give us a detailed bug report.

This version should NOT be installed on a production server. It has hundreds of minor bugs. Don’t post reports like “when I click on X option, nothing happens” … we know… :)

What we’re trying to achieve with this post is feedback on the UI, and file system debugging.

    Thanks!

now that’s a serious amount of coding, before the bug reports pour in, I just want to say thanks…

Cool stuff! I’ve installed in on my dev server, and the amount of configuration options are amazing.. great work :) Some things I stumbled upon:

1: When you go to the media upload page, there seems to be a div missing or a CSS issue (url; http://yoursite.com/members/admin/media/albums/1/add-media/.). I’m using a custom child theme, and when I go to that page my layout will go funky.. I think the problem is somewhere around the body/container area of your template.
2: Could you maybe add a CSS ID to the different sizes nav div on the single picture page. It’s awesome that the default styles are inherited, but an extra ID would be good for theme designers to fixed odd looking styling in their Child themes. Like this:

    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1628201/Screen%20shot%202010-06-02%20at%201.08.01%20PM.png

If I stumble upon more, I’ll report back.. but thanks for the all the work so far.. it looks really good even in heavily customized Child Theme :)

seems to be becoming great. Could you let us know, what should be working already?
    Widgets don’t appear
    Other Media Types than pictures?
    etc…
Would be helpful in giving feedback…

    THX alot!

Cool stuff indeed! The backend interface (and the sheer volume of options) is ossum! Here are some issues I’ve found… as requested, I’ll leave the minor ones out :-)

1 – Similar issue as @Bowe, ie: creating or adding to an album messes with headline and font size settings, and results in the entire page being aligned to the left.
2 – This appears beneath each item on single view:
    array(3) { [0]=> string(2) “me” [1]=> string(4) “item” [2]=> string(2) “16″ } array(1) { [0]=> string(2) “16″ }
3 – Under Plugin Settings, no options for Templates. I’m presuming this will be styling options ala Facebook, Flickr et al, as suggested in an earlier release?
4 – Oops! Audio/video uploads result in a white screen with funky messages (Warning: Division by zero in …sitename…/wp-content/plugins/bp-album/includes/sub-media-cache.php on line 267) … not yet supported?
5 – Browser upload doesn’t allow multiple files even though option is selected in backend. (Flash uploader plays nice though.)
6 – “Comments are disabled” message appears for each picture even though comments are enabled in backend and through UI.
7 – Suggestion for more intuitive user experience: add “Delete Item” beside “Edit Item” on single view screen.
8 – Organizing by tags is still funky: clicking ANY tag results in ALL images being shown.
9 – Activity stream posting of thumbnails works but the item count shows double the number of photos; ie: if 4 photos are uploaded to an album, the count displays “and 4 other photos”. By the way, grouping the items in the activity stream is brilliant!
10 – Selecting an image as album cover works fine but also results in a confusing red warning: There were problems updating the media item.

OK, so I added in a couple of minor ones ;-)

Keep it up guys, this is shaping up to be one killer plugin!

Well judging by the fact that you were all able to install the plugin, upload, and view images I’d say this test has so far been a roaring success!

We’ve really got some bleeding-edge stuff going on with the BP Album adaptive disk cache and activity stream post grouping.

The next thing you guys can do that would *really really* help is try uploading 30 or so images from 3 different users using the batch uploader, and then go in and verify that their images display at different sizes and their activity streams update properly. Try deleting/renaming/updating privacy for individual images and entire albums, and make sure they get updated in the activity stream.

You can filter BP Album+ activity posts by *privacy level* so that only friends see a member’s uploads when viewing their activity stream. But we’ll show you how that works when I’m done writing the advanced templates… ;)

Thanks again for all the help guys. Testing is a massive project, and crowdsourcing it helps get the plugin finished much faster!

    On the bottom page of an uploaded image I am getting this code “array(3) { [0]=> string(1) “1″ [1]=> string(4) “item” [2]=> string(1) “3″ } array(1) { [0]=> string(1) “3″ } “
EDIT: Sorry, has aready been posted.

It would be cool if we could add…
    - albums to groups. :)
    - let friends download images, albums
    - create subalbums or subcategories

When you create an album, it messes up your theme by moving it to LHS. And when you try to upload a photo
    you get error msg:
There were problems saving picture details.

Excellent! The “problems saving picture details” error is *exactly* what we were hoping someone would run into.

Now, go to the “Debug tools” tab, copy the entire data dump, and post it to the forum.

    Thanks!

Yes, we are working on all of the features you mentioned, but this is a testing thread.

Otherwise, thanks for the error report.

Also, add define(‘BP_ALBUM_EXPERT_MODE’, 1); to your wp-config file, then try changing the names of the cache directories in the cache setup screen.

    Thanks!

    - when editing “Move Item To Album” > it autoselects always the upper top dashes

    - commenting on images are not working even though commenting is enabled

    - html uploader works only with one image at a time (mac osx, firefox) / might be normal^^

    - uploaded image with friends only activated, uploader can’t see the image thumb within activity stream

    - when uploading batch photos it shows for every 5 images a new activity stream

    - to see friends images i have to click the media button on his profile, it doesn’t show the images within the activity

    - “tag yourself” returns “the page you are looking for was not found”

    - when editing “Member Tags” >”There were problems updating the media item

    - creates multiple activity streams when batch uploading more than 5 images

    - Also, add define(‘BP_ALBUM_EXPERT_MODE’, 1); to your wp-config file, then try changing the names of the cache directories in the cache setup screen > there is lock icon

@foxly I tried the beta link but it seems to be the same as the alpha that I downloaded. Is the link at the top of this page the same/correct? The build I’m testing is Version: 0.1.9 Build Date: 2010.05.15 (alpha)

@foxly just wondering if you have any fix I can do to enable comments on uploaded pics using the alpha version above.

also, just in case you don’t know, spaces are stripped from tags, and the tag results page returns all photos.

I’m working on the member tagging and user tagging problems right now, as well as the comment disable problem. These are all difficult problems that require considerable work because of the way the internals of BuddyPress work.

But… working on them night and day till we have them working.

    Thanks!

@foxly, I posted yesterday into this forum, but maybe something was unclear.
All Buddypress Pages have a 404 if album+ is active.
HTTP Status Code: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found
All pages are visible. Its the header. But it is quite impotent for many reasons, that it has a 200.

You will absolutely *love* our new templates.

We have “noob” class functions that let inexperienced develpers change the way the template operates with minimal effort.

And then we have “pro” class functions that let you make sweeping changes to BP Album+ core, and build your own loops right in the template.

Templates can also set EVERY config option on the BPA admin backend, although it does ask the user for authorization. “The template ‘kitten_explosion’ wants to register a new cache image size. This could increase the amount of disk space your system requires. Accept/Reject”

Hang in there. It’s coming together really fast at this point.

We’re still developing on WP 2.9.2 until they at least have a Release Candidate out.

After we have it working properly on 2.9.2, we will upgrade it to 3.0.

One thing you have to understand about BP Album+ is that it actually uses VERY LITTLE of WordPress or even BuddyPress for that matter.

Both of these above systems are designed for their respective jobs and do them well. But ask WordPress to transcode a 24 megapixel image from TIF to PNG, or generate thumbnails for 3GB of random images, and it’s going to choke. Likewise for extracting Geotagging info from GPS equipped cameras and cell phones.

I’d say we use perhaps ten WordPress functions. So upgrading/compatibility/etc isn’t a really huge issue.

    Thanks!

Ok… keep up the work and maybe support XML-RPC Service for uploading media via wordpress mobile.

Just FYI… 3.0 has been Release Candidate for over a week now. Since May 28th I believe.

OK … as someone mentioned, serious amount of coding here. The ideas you put into this update are great! Now, have been testing it and apart from running into already posted buds, I found another possible bug.
Maybe you’re already aware of this… here we go… On my test site, before using Version: 0.1.9 Build Date: 2010.05.15 , I was running bpalbum 0.1.7, now after upgrade, all pictures that were uploaded by previous version of bpalbum aren’t showing up. I think the 0.1.9. version did not assume there were already pictures uploaded and did not recognize it.
That’s it for now… continue with testing. keep up the good work guys!
