new user account creation not sending email

When I create a new user account it is suppose to send the password to the email address that is provided by the end user during sign up, but its not sending any email? Do I have to have an email server setup on my webserver in order for it to work? Also is there a way to change the socialNetwork logo on the main screen of the buddypress default theme homepage?

Codyb-

Yes, you have to have a basic mail server set up. Otherwise, the mail will not go out.
