pages: register and activate?

I’m brand new to buddypress – just installed on 4/28/13

I’m unclear on the difference between the “register” and “activate” page functions in buddypress.

Specifically, I’m using it inside an S2member pay site… so I need to know if the “register” page should point to my “sign up and pay” page when sends the person to paypal.

And that still doesn’t explain what the “activate” page is.

So, I’d love to hear from @boone on this one…

The activate page can be used to activate an account manually. It has a text input field which lets members enter a key to activate their account. It may be useful to some site admins who need to activate accounts via the front end.

I see no need for the page myself.

Hey @henrywright-1 thanks for that response. So, where does that “key” come from? How is it generated. I think I’m going to need to make up a few accounts to play around and see how it works with multiple users on the system.

This key works same as the link to confirm your acount sent to your e-mail works. The difference is that the key has to be manually entered in the field on “Activate” page. You can hide this page from your menu for logged in users because it is meanless for them after registration, activation and logging in the site for the first time.

Thanks @anton-naydenoff – but I’m still unclear on how the key is generated.

Maybe an example would help. I want to create 3 fake users for my site to try it out and see how the interaction works. How do I generate 3 unique keys for those “users” so that I can put those fake profiles in the system? And keep in mind, I have it inside S2member – so I’d love to be able to do it without having to pay through paypal for each of those new profiles. Seems there has to be a way on the backend to do that.

You don’t need to create users such a way. As an administrator of your site you are able to create them in the database directly or from Admin panel (+New -> User). Honestly, I do not know how this key is generated and where you could find it… 🙁

Thanks @anton-naydenoff – I’ve added a few “fictional” members to my site – but they don’t have access to the things behind my paywall. Looks like I’m going to have to figure out how to make them “paid” members. I wonder if S2member has a way to do that when they really haven’t paid?
