Thanks @megainfo for your answer. I actually tried that, but it doesn’t seem to work and the infos don’t seem up to date. I searched around here but I didn’t find a proper tutorial (for BP 1.6.1 with WP 3.4.2), do you know such a thing ? (I’m lost with the ‘how to do it’ part, not the files to download).
To be more precise : should I use a bp-custom.php file in my plugins directory (with what inside, I’ve read different things) ? where should I put my bp-fr_FR po/mo files ? should I tell BP to use the french language or will it be automatic ?

It was so stupid : it’s not written here http://fr.buddypress.org/home/ but I actually found the info on the other site you suggested – http://bp-fr.net – the key is : not to use the right click of the mouse to download the files (po / mo) otherwise it doesn’t work…!
