Searching Members using ‘bp_filter_request’

I was wondering if it is possible to extend the functionality for `bp_filter_request` to include specific arguments or fields when searching – at the moment, it seems that only some types of custom profile fields and the username are included by default when running a member search, but it would be great if specific fields could also be included / excluded from the search (e.g. the ‘primary’ field).
I’m aware that `bp_filter_request` takes an ‘extras’ argument, but I’m not sure what arguments takes, or if this allows for something specific to be included in the search.
