Select one column layout for Buddy Press default theme?

How do I select the one-column layout for the BuddyPress default theme? I activate but can find no selection anywhere in the settings.
I realize this is a basic question but I found no way of searching the support forums and Google searches are not doing the trick. Am I missing something?
