Server requirements for 100K active users

  • Hi guys,

Planning to start my blog network by using BuddyPress. Have a technical question about server/hosting. We will have 100K active users/blogs, what type of server do you think we need? Dedicated server? I did little research, they saying there are different type of MySQL database setup some can handle it some can not. I have no idea when it comes to server/hosting side. I want to rent a server that can handle 100K active users.

I would really appreciate your help.

  • Suggest you hire someone with server expertise if you’re talking about that scale. It’s cheaper than trying to scrape together advice from forums.

100k users, one at a time, is different from 100k users visiting your site at the same time. It’s a question of concurrency, really, and what your requirements are about server redundancy and failover.

Whatever runs WordPress at this level, will run BuddyPress.

    Hi Paul

Thanks for advise, sounds good. Can you please recommend a site to find a server technician?

    Thanks

You’ll probably be better off talking to hosting providers that have managed cloud servers.
Managed – meaning the package includes server admin service.
If they have managed cloud servers then they’ll have managed dedicated servers.
Be clear about the difference between 100k users and 100k blogs.

For 100k users, you’ll need several servers. It will be expensive.
