Suggestion: make profile avatar image "required" on sign up

One of the things I loved on Ning (where I used to have a community) was to tick the box “required” on the avatar image.
Everybody on the community had a picture – and that was one of the elements to humanize it. It was very nice.
But so far this seems complicated or impossible on Buddypress:

Anyone have a solution? Maybe gravatar makes this more complex on BP than ning?
