Tracking User Registration/Activation in Google Analytics

I’ve been scratching my head trying to figure out the best way to track a new user registration in Google Analytics. Does anyone have any ideas? It seems so simple, yet I can’t seem to get it to work.

I’ve been trying to setup a Goal (conversion) with the following paramters; Goal URL: “/activate”, Match Type: “Exact Match”, but that doesn’t work. I’ve also tried other parameters without any luck.

Has anyone been able to set this up correctly? I have also tried playing with funnels, but I don’t think that’s the way forward as users may visit other pages before going to the activate page (which they would only visit after receiving a confirmation e-mail).

    Can anyone help?

I don’t have any knowledge about GA, but if you figure it out, please come back and update this thread, as I’m sure others would find it useful.

    Hi Paul,

Do you know anyone that might? I’m scaling the net trying to find out what I can, but nothing seems to be coming up?

From doing a bit more reading, I’ve altered my parameters to; Goal URL: “activate/?key=”, Match Type=”Head Match”, and whilst GA seems to hold stats on the Goal Flow report for that page, the Goal URLs report shows nothing. Very confusing indeed, but perhaps I’m setting up Goals all wrong.

    Hi @megainfo.

Could you please be a bit more specific?

I would like to track how many people click on the “Submit” button after they fill out the form in the /register/ page.

Then I would like to track how many go to the /activate/ page.

This will help me see the funnel: Ad -> Register page -> Submit Form succes -> Activate

    Thank you!

I will respond respond tomorrow. Falling asleep but event tracking will defenetly work. You have to modify your ga script slightly.
