Translating BuddyPress

  • Avatar of Andy Peatling

    @apeatling

    I’ve now generated a BuddyPress POT file that can be used to translate BuddyPress into other languages.

    You can find the POT file in /bp-languages/buddypress.pot when you check out the latest revision (r510+). I will keep the PO file up to date with the latest revision.

    Please note – there are new text strings going into BuddyPress all the time right now, so if you create a language file before the first release, you will need to keep it up to date with the latest revision.

    For more information on translating, check out the WordPress Codex page on translation, the same methods apply.

    I have added a new BuddyPress Codex page for language translations. If you make a new language translation, please add a codex page for it, and and a link to where it can be downloaded. For example, German: http://codex.buddypress.org/translations/deutsch.

    Please let me know if there are any problems with this.

    Hi folks !

    The WPMU pot file exist !

    You can found it here:

    http://svn.automattic.com/wordpress-i18n/pot/mu/trunk/wordpress.pot

    The file contains all the lines for wp, but also for wpmu.

    I translated it in french for 2.7 beta without problems; Just take care off many plural forms who need to be translated too…

    I’m looking for a bbPress translation who works. Actually, the forums are only half translated. If somebody has a solution ?

    Nevermind – I figured out that the .pot file has changed for 1.0b2.

    Now I need to find out how I merge my current work with the new file.

    Ok, now I can’t edit my old post so here’s how I did it.

    I use Poedit and it has a method for updating my current .po file from a .pot file. Just select “Catalog” -> “Update from POT file…” and select the new bp .pot file in the 1.0b2 release.

    First of all, BuddyPress is so promising. Keep up the good work!

    Currently, I’m involved in implementing BP for a local NGO, and I’m happy to share the translation files.

    I’ve done translating the “Bahasa Indonesia” for the RC-1 version and posted on the codex page:

    http://codex.buddypress.org/translations/indonesia-indonesian-id_id/

    Feel free to comment and correct any error.

    Hi all,

    I am using Poedit to translate the BuddyPress file. When I save the file, I always get this error message

    11:23:10: D:wampwww8phetwp-contentmu-pluginsbp-languagesbuddypress-vi.po:844: a format specification for argument 1 doesn’t exist in ‘msgstr’

    11:23:10: D:wampwww8phetwp-contentmu-pluginsbp-languagesbuddypress-vi.po:2566: a format specification for argument 1 doesn’t exist in ‘msgstr’

    11:23:10: msgfmt: found 2 fatal errors

    Some lines work, and some don’t. Can someone help to correct this error?

    Thanks

    Sounds like you have tried to edit the POT file in a text editor by doing something like a find and replace.

    Or – you haven’t filled in all the headers correctly

    Download the latest POT here : http://svn.buddypress.org/trunk/bp-languages/buddypress.pot

    Before opening in POEDIT, open it in your fav text editor, lines 8 to 16 (assuming word wrap isn’t on) need to be filled in with your own values. Save and close

    Open with POEDIT and make your changes in there and save.

    Thanks for the advice

    I translated 80% done. I uploaded on the web but some lines does not translate at all.

    I triple check, make sure I translated that line.

    What could be a problem?

    Thanks for your help.

    Sorry for jumping in here as this thread seems to have taking so many twists and turns that it appears to have a bit of a different purpose than originally. However, this is the only thread that comes close to answering my, seemingly easy, question but I’m still having issues. Specifically, all I’m trying to do is to change the word ‘Friends’ to ‘Contacts’ throughout the entire WPMU/BP install and not truly translate anything. Per suggestions from a few posts earlier in this thread I’ve done the following:

    1. changed the references to ‘Friend’ to contacts in the buddypress.po file using poedit

    2. saved the file changed in #1 as en_US.po and generated the corresponding en_US.mo file upon saving

    3. uploaded both the .po/.mo file into both the /wp-content/languages and /wp-content/mu-plugins/bp-languages folders

    4. verified that ‘American English’ was now available/set in the ‘Site Admin – Option’ and ‘Settings – General’ sections of the site.

    5. change the ‘WPLANG’ setting in the wp-config.php file to en_US

    and ….

    nothing has changed. What am I missing here? I know it must be me but this seems to be an awful lot of hoops to go through to make a seemingly easy and I would think common change. I’ve been at this for some time now so any clues anyone can provide would ease my frustration a bit. Thank in advance.

    About to start a danish translation of BuddyPress. Currently considering to use either LaunchPad or Pootle as our collaboration tool.

    Anyone know if Dreamcolor expects to initiate the LaunchPad project:

    https://translations.launchpad.net/buddypress or release the ownership, for others to use it?

    Suggestion: why don’t we settle on the same tool to use, eg LaunchPad – would make it easier for other to take part of the work.

    Hope someone can help me… I’m tearing my hair out!

    I’ve created buddypress-xxx.po and .mo files, put them in both /wp-content/plugins/buddypress/languages and /wp-content/mu-plugins/bp-languages

    I’ve also added the following code to /wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-custom.php:

    Code:
    // Activate the custom terminology for DevelopaDream
    define( ‘BPLANG’, ‘developadream’ );
    if ( file_exists( BP_PLUGIN_DIR . ‘/bp-languages/buddypress-’ . BPLANG . ‘.mo’ ) ) {
    load_textdomain( ‘buddypress’, BP_PLUGIN_DIR . ‘/bp-languages/buddypress-’ . BPLANG . ‘.mo’ );
    }

    Despite that, I’m still not getting any change in language on the site at all.

    Am I missing something?

    Is there any way to hard code alter certain phrases?

    This will be fixed in 1.0.1. There is a patch for this in the trunk.

    In the meantime, try adding this to your functions.php file for your theme(s).

    // Load the buddypress translation file for current language
    function bp_load_buddypress_textdomain() {
    $locale = get_locale();
    $locale = apply_filters('buddypress_locale', $locale);
    $mofile = BP_PLUGIN_DIR . "/bp-languages/buddypress-$locale.mo";
    load_textdomain( 'buddypress', $mofile );
    }
    add_action ( 'plugins_loaded', 'bp_load_buddypress_textdomain', 9);

    Thanks James Jacoby for the code.

    But very unfortunately this is not working.

    Any other things to be done anywhere else ?
