Truncate sitewide activity

Some of the updates in the site wide activity widget become particularly long when someone on my site decides to write a novel as a status update. Is there a way to truncate all activity in the widget so it don’t get out of hand. Thanks

I have the same problem http://www.pmo-netherlands.nl I wrote a long post and it looks awful on the homepage and I can’t even delete it as admin.

I have no options for this widget. When I go to the widget in my widget menu; it says; “no options”. Where can I find the settings so I can truncate messages?

Sorry, update: I did find settings but It’s only about what/where to show not about how it’s shown.
