Unable to create new user – Usernames can contain only letters, etc.

    Hello –

Just got started on Buddypress, and I’m playing around with it on a sandbox site. I’m unable to create new users – for some reason, it thinks that I’m using illegal characters. I’m definitely not, though; I’m only using letters. I was unable to register the name “Darth Vader,” or “DarthVader,” or “DarthVader1.” However, the username “1234a” worked for some reason.

    Picture of my issue

Here’s a pic trying to use the name “Cornelius.” I see nothing wrong with it.

I’ve already created a new site to try it out on without any other plugins activated. I’ve disabled buddypress, removed it from my plugins folder, re-added it, and then reactivated it. That didn’t help.

Thanks for any help you might give.

Whoops, I linked the image incorrectly. Here it is: The real problem

    Figured it out:

It seems like it won’t accept usernames with capital letters. That’s a litle odd, but I can work with it.

    Able to register DarthVader fine!

Are you trying to register DarthVader. or , ?

No, I wasn’t trying to register it with the period, that was just because of the way I wrote the sentence. Damn punctuation rules. But I’m only able to register people without any capital letters. Any idea?

I am encountering exactly the same problem. Any developments on this?

Not really, as I stated earlier in thread I have no issues. Ensure you have no plugins activate that may affect this aspect.

I have disabled all plugins and have the latest version of Buddypress and WordPress on a multisite installation. On the registration page the username field insists on lowercase characters. The only way around this for me is to change the hint.

Which file do I edit to change hint from “Usernames can contain only letters, numbers, ., -, *, and @” to something like “Usernames can contain only lowercase letters, numbers, ., -, *, and @”

As a work around I modified register.php in the theme to request users to register lowercase usernames.
