Unable to send out invites

I think I am missing something obvious here, but I’ll be damned if I know what it is!
Okay, I have set up a forum and everything is fine, and created a group.
I now want to invite people to join the forum.I had anticipated clicking the group, and selecting ‘send invites’ and then being able to enter email addresses of people I want to invite to join; however I get the above cryptic message and instead of any invite mechanism.
Any ideas what I am missing here?
