updating to 1.9.1

I am currently running a WP (3.8) site and my BP is on version 1.8.1. I tried to update it to 1.9.1 but it says:

Removing the old version of the plugin…

Could not remove the old plugin.

Plugin update failed.

Then I tried deleting the file completely to install the new version. But it wouldn’t delete the plugin. I would get this message:

Plugin could not be deleted due to an error: Could not fully remove the plugin(s) buddypress/bp-loader.php.

How can I update BP to the current version due to these issues?

That makes sense.

Unfortunately, the dev company I have been working with setup my dev version (which I need to update) and didn’t tell me where the dev file is stored in FTP. I wrote to them for insight into where they put it so I can work with it, but I haven’t heard back from them.

Once I find it, I will probably use your method.
