Username autocomplete not working

WP 3.5.1 / BP 1.6.4
When I go to compose a private message and start to type user names into the field, the ajax gear icon shows, but no autocomplete suggestions are shown.
Can confirm that this is occurring with all other plugins deactivated and the default theme activated too.

I have the same problem on the same setup and have conducted the same test.

I suspect that the cause of this is also the cause of Activity stream updates not working on my site.
Pretty frustrating!
Can’t help but wonder if this has something to do with the ajax hardening introduced in 1.6.4 as mentioned in the release announcement
