using buddypress media plugin in place of wp gallery?

    Are there any future plans for allowing us to use the media plugin instead of wp-gallery when creating posts?

    I think it’s universally agreed upon that the wp-gallery function sucks. Frankly imho, it is the weakest link in wordpress to date. After playing with buddypress media, I am completely impressed with the power and functionality that it offers. The album organization is top-notch and frankly I think it is quickly becoming the best media gallery on the market.

    I just see a disconnect for my users having to use a separate media system when they create blog posts by having to use the wp-gallery. It would be so much nicer to simply call the buddypress media plugin, and use it instead to upload or select images to insert into the posts.

    Because I use the buddypress groupblogs plugin, that means not only does each user have their own blog, but so does each group. I can see how it would quickly become confusing to users to tell them that images they upload in media are not available in wp-gallery and vice-versa.

    If it is not on the roadmap… it would be a fantastic addition. You have my vote, and I am sure many others as well.

    This is precisely the kind of situation the new plugin architecture is designed to handle.

    First off, one feature we’ll be adding is media embeds using short codes. If the site admin enables this feature, users will be presented with an embed code below their media items. Something like [*embed*=16fb8c7bb30a3]. When a user pastes it into any post on the site, for example in a forum, the media item corresponding to the embed code will appear in the post.

    Second, as part of the group albums project http://code.google.com/p/buddypress-media/issues/detail?id=5 we’ll be adding some pretty impressive API functions that will let other plugins access user’s BP Media items; so authors of plugins like BuddyPress Group Blogs will be able to integrate with BP Media and provide even more functionality.
