Word count vs character count for automated excerpts: Feedback wanted

Hi everyone. I was hoping to get some feedback from some l18n folks about the following ticket: http://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/1222#comment:3

Short version: BP creates excerpts in a few places by chopping a piece of text to a certain number of words, where words are understood to be delineated by spaces. The problem is that this does not work for languages that don’t use spaces between words, so excerpts in those languages end up being really long. Is it better practice to use a character count (but still only to break on spaces/punctuation so that alphabetical words don’t get cut off)?

Makes sense to use a character count rather than words. According to Yahoo Answers the average letter count for English words is 4.5, so say instead of breaking after the first space after 10 words, we break after the first space after 45 characters. Won’t make much difference for languages based on the Latin alphabet, but will help Asian language.

+1 character count. Better practice and easier styling.
Caveat re Chinese characters: a character split from the word can change a tame word into a dirty one, or so a friend said.

Echoing the sentiments for character count as well!

@mercime – Unless we come up with some good AI, things like that might be unavoidable :) In any case, I’m still only going to break on spaces, I’ll just be using character counts to determine minimum excerpt length.

Yep. Character count. We see character counts all the time – Twitter, FaceBook – so not a huge intelectual leap – well, for most.
