BuddyPress 1.5 – Beta 3

August 30, 2011 in News

Available today for developer testing is BuddyPress 1.5 Beta 3. We’re keeping our momentum going and squashed enough bugs in Beta 2 that we want to give it another trip around the block to make sure it’s solid.

If you are a BuddyPress plugin author, please take the time to test your plugins against the latest code and let us know if something isn’t working quite right. We have an extensive change-log for 1.5 and we want everyone to transition from 1.2 as painlessly as possible.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one… Please don’t run BuddyPress Beta software on your live production site. We know there will be quirks and we are keeping up with your bug reports as they come in. Install BuddyPress 1.5 on a local installation or a test site, and let us know if you find anything that isn’t working the way it should. The end of August is upon us, and we’re ramping up for a release in the coming days.

You can download BuddyPress 1.5 Beta 3 today, from the bottom of our Trac page.

BuddyPress 1.5 – Beta 1

July 29, 2011 in News

Wait… 1.5? What happened to 1.3? Or 1.4 for that matter?

You see… BuddyPress 1.2 was released on February 16, 2010. We’ve shipped 9 point releases since then, but it’s been over 17 months since a major release of BuddyPress has come through the tubes.

We do our best to mirror the WordPress development cycles as closely as possible – maybe a little too closely. Back in 2004, WordPress went through a growth spurt of its own, going 9 months between major releases (also between versions 1.2 and 1.5) so we are doing the same, and skipping ahead to 1.5 ourselves.

Here are the stats we’re using to justify the version inflation:

  • 792 tickets closed
  • 494 confirmed bug fixes
  • 2,161 total code changes since 1.2 was released

The similarities between BuddyPress and WordPress development symbolize the nature of developing something totally new and exciting, so we think it’s fitting to bump our version number in a similar fashion.

Because of the volume of changes internally, we’re packaging up a developer beta so plugin authors have time to review our changes, report bugs, and give everyone a few weeks to tie up any loose ends that are left.

If you are a BuddyPress plugin author, now is your time to help us help you, and check out all the work that’s gone into making the next version of BuddyPress faster, more efficient, more secure, and easier to code against.

If you are a user or a designer, check out the changes to the BP Default theme. We’ve done our best to turn it into a theme you want to use, and have it still show off all the features too.

If you are neither (or both) of those things, you can help by documenting the codex. We’re trying to do our part by writing the phpDoc as we go, and if you can help move some of that into the codex, it helps everyone!

As always, please DO NOT run BuddyPress Beta software on your live production site. There are going to be quirks with existing plugins, and we will be updating code rapidly as bug reports come in. Install BuddyPress 1.5 on a local installation or a test site, and let us know if you find anything that isn’t working the way it should. We are hoping the beta period will only last a few weeks, with a release in August.

You can download BuddyPress 1.5 Beta 1 today, from the bottom of our Trac page. Happy Testing!

BuddyPress 1.2 Beta

January 25, 2010 in News

Now alive and ready for testing is the beta version of BuddyPress 1.2.

This version will work with both WordPress 2.9.1 and WordPress MU 2.9.1 or higher. We especially need standard WordPress installation testers to put BuddyPress through its paces. Installation instructions can be found in the readme.txt file.

If you’d prefer to not download and install the beta version, you can always help with testing by registering on our testing community site. This always runs the bleeding edge version of BuddyPress.

You can find a list of known issues and a place to post bugs via the BuddyPress Trac installation.

Testing Upgrades

If you’re going test upgrading a previous BuddyPress installation please read the following instructions (please only test backup copies when upgrading with a beta):

  1. If you’re using a custom theme that is not a child theme of bp-sn-parent, please download and install the backwards compatibility plugin before doing anything.
  2. Deactivate BuddyPress.
  3. Upload and overwrite your existing BuddyPress plugin directory.
  4. Delete “bp-default” and “bp-sn-parent” from your themes directory.
  5. Activate BuddyPress. You do not need to move any themes.

We also now have a development blog. Weekly meetings are held in IRC every Wednesday at 19:00 UTC. Happy testing!

BuddyPress 1.1 Beta

September 14, 2009 in News

BuddyPress 1.1 is now available for beta testing. This version is intended for testing only, you should not try running it on production sites. You can download the beta via this zip file, or via subversion.

If you download the zip version you will need to download bbPress 1.0 separately. Please extract bbPress into the folder “bp-forums/bbpress” inside of the BuddyPress plugin directory.

As always, please report bugs on our trac site with the milestone “1.1″. You can also view all outstanding bugs for this version. Patches for any of those bugs are very welcome. Please use your BuddyPress.org username and password to log into the trac site.

Update: Please make sure you read the installation instructions as there are changes from previous versions.

BuddyPress 1.0b1 Components

December 15, 2008 in News

BuddyPress Download ScreenThe first beta release of completed BuddyPress components and themes is now available via the download page.

Each component and theme in this beta stage is feature complete for its 1.0 version. The purpose of the beta is to weed out any bugs not found in the pre-release stage and ramp up the plugins to production quality.

If you install BuddyPress and give it a test run, we’d really appreciate your feedback and bug reports in trac. You can also find a list of known bugs.

Thank you to everyone who has helped make this first beta a reality. It’s been ten months of hard work to get to this stage. We’re almost there, there’s only a little bit further to go.

Beta Release Scheduled For December 15

November 25, 2008 in News

Some updates on the release status of BuddyPress:

- The target is to release beta versions of all the available plugins on Dec 15.

- From then, there will be a feature freeze and there will be a period of bug fixing to stabilize the plugins ready for a 1.0 release.

- Each component will be released as an individual 1.0. There will be no ”BuddyPress 1.0”. BuddyPress is a collection of official component plugins, each adding a new feature with its own roadmap. However, there will always be a zip file available with the current versions of official component plugins to download in one package.

- As soon as all major issues have been resolved, 1.0 versions of each official component plugin will be released. As it’s around Christmas time (most people will be too busy eating turkey to test) I’m not attaching a final date. Each component will be released ASAP after its beta one by one, when ready. By doing this you won’t have to wait for all components to reach release quality before any are made available.

- The photo gallery and status update components will not be available along with the first release of available official components. These will be a priority after the first release and can be added to any installation at a later date. There just wasn’t enough time to fit these in.

So what’s left to do before Dec 15?

- Filtering of friends and groups lists to show ”Recently Active Friends”, ”Recently Added Friends” etc. In groups ”Groups I’ve Created”, ”Groups Recently Updated”, ”Groups Recently Joined”, etc.

- Finish the members directory as well as adding blog and group directories, accessible via ”domain.com/groups/”, ”domain.com/members/”. ”domain.com/blogs/”.

- bbPress forums for groups.

- Private messaging autocomplete on friend names.

- RSS Feeds for activity streams.

Not long to go now, thank you all for helping to test and your contributions. I’m really excited to see what people will do with release quality components. Rock on!
