The combination of the 2 setting did the trick.

define(‘BP_DISABLE_ADMIN_BAR’, true);

/* Remove the WordPress Admin bar */
add_filter( ‘show_admin_bar’, ‘__return_false’ );

… tried it in both wp-config.php and bp-custom.php. Doesn’t appear to be working.
