If you’re on BP 1.7, make sure that your theme and plugins are compatible with that version. You might also want to check your .htaccess file.

It does have a short code for showing the activty stream on FrontPage

@bibliata Why use a shortcode? Have you tried making the Activity page as front page in Settings > Reading and creating a new page e.g. Blog, and set Blog for your posts in the same panel?
