And when I looked for the “bp-custom.php” file, I don’t see it anywhere in the recent installation.

@ebarney You need to create the file. In the last line of the first paragraph at http://codex.buddypress.org/developer/customizing/changing-internal-configuration-settings/ there’s a link to the bp-custom.php page
