This is because all available cms engines are very heavy, does a bunch of unnecessary mysql queries, and use up too much execution memory. I end up writing my own social network based on codeigniter framework.

Well, the problem is that localization script is loaded in wrong place, too late to translate previously initiated script.
All you have to do is to put

load_plugin_textdomain( ‘eventpress’, false, basename( EP_DIR ) . ‘/lang’ );

right after:
