preg_match_all(‘#(?:(?:http?|https?)://+.+|(?:+.)+(?:{2,4})(?:*)?)#i’, $content, $matches);

and that took care of my issue, if someone who knows regex better than I agrees with this, then it would be nice to have that as an option in the config file
