Did you check if it’s been updated for or compatible with current BP version?

2. What theme are you using? If you change to BP Default theme, there’s a status update box in the group’s home page (activity) where members can post updates.

Change to Twenty Twelve theme and check if cropping is corrected. If not, deactivate other plugins batch by batch except BuddyPress to check which is interfering with cropping.
