<p>The solution is to add</p>
<p>define( ’BP_ENABLE_USERNAME_COMPATIBILITY_MODE’, true );</p>
<p>to the top of the define list in the wp-config.php file. Fixed for things like john.smith not sure about other characters.</p>
<p>Thanks Brandon &#8211; though I figured it out a wee while ago from a similar problem posted in BuddyPress Trac. </p>
