You would not see the button on your own members directory listing. Have you tried creating a test user and logging in to see if the button is there? I am for hire if you need help and you can contact me here if you have a budget to work with.

bp-custom.php should reside in http://www.your-site/wp-content/plugins or if your on localhost it would be http://localhost/your-site/wp-content/plugins. On the members directory you should see a button to the right of that member that says “Remove Friend!” If you are not friends already it would read “Add Friend.”
