@ldesherl You do not need to install BuddyPress in order to get a forum. You only need to install bbPress forums plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/bbpress/ which works perfectly without BuddyPress.

Deactivate all plugins except BuddyPress. Change to a WP Default Twenty-* theme then activate BuddyPress.

P.S. For forums, install bbPress which works very well with BuddyPress
