If the user is already logged in it is default behavior for them to be redirected to the home page which makes sense, since someone who has the ability to login had already been through the registration and activation process. Hope this answers your question. šŸ™‚

better to install bbpress using FTP. I can do it either way, but Iā€™d prefer to do it through BuddyPress
