    thanks for the reply guys

    Is there way of using the above code to simply display a notice along the lines of ‘you must be logged in to view this content’
    as apposed to redirecting them to the register page, as I don’t really want that great big wordpress logo staring at them lol

    So as I see it, I have to create the bp-custom.php file to place the code in right ?

    well no I don’t see any similarity. My last post was asking about restricting member profile viewings, then I enquired about activity posts, now I’m asking about restricting the viewing on the actual members page.

    I’m sorry you may get the impression that I’m repeating myself but in theory these are 3 seperate issues.
    If there were any similarities in terms of addressing these issues then I wouldn’t have to go to 3 different areas to edit.

    I don’t think it’s fair to imply that I appear to be making ‘no’ attempt at at helping my self with these issues, for the record I am very much a ‘hands on’ type of chap who does not expect anything to be handed on a plate. I equally don’t expect every post to receive a reply and at least wait until alternative avenues have been exhausted.

    While I appreciate the advise that’s been offered to me in these forums I’d like to inform those who I have conversed with that on various occasions I have actually been misguided in terms of code edits, and actually found ways to fix these problems myself.
    I could quite easily come here to moan, critisize, and equally imply that at times it appears that one needs a preverbial crow-bar to lever advise out of other wp/bp users, but I don’t, and choose to keep my personal opinions to myself.

    Hi pcwriter, thanks for the reply.

    In a nutshell.. I’m aiming to achieve results very similar to this: http://swapbbm.com/

    I’m not using groups, so no worries there. I basically wanna restrict all posts/update notifications, but keep the profile pics/avatars viewable.
    as a kind of ‘teaser’ or sneak preview to what goes on inside the site.

    thanks @r-a-y

    I’m looking into this plugin and associated comments but have a couple of questions to ask that I cannot see an answer to elsewhere..
    Firstly, I only want to show my sites members update posts on the site activity page. Is there a setting in the plugin that will allow me to restrict all other activity posts apart from these.?

    Also, I’m not sure where to add the code for the admin update..?

    thanks

    just realised I need to restrict my members activity posts to registered users..

    using hindsight if I use the same code and principle in: members/single/activity/permalinks

    this will prevent non-members from viewing registered/logged-in members posts right..?

    or am I jumping the gun a bit here

    * update* – just tried it..didn’t work

    maybe I need to edit in: members/single/activity.php..? is this right anyone? thanks

    @hnla, if you would let me know where I go to make the edit at file level I’ll get the job done and can put it to bed ;)

    hi nailaping thanks for the reply
    ok im gonna attempt to this, although this may seem simple for some, believe me this is a big deal for me so ill need this broken down

    ok i go to cpanel, logged in..now where do i go to begin the child theme construction..?

    Home Directory
    Web Root (public_html/www)
    Public FTP Root (public_ftp)
    or
    Document Root for: ?

    @pinhit

    thanks for the reply @pcwriter

    If you don’t mind I need a little more assistance with this (as I’m not code savvy)

    how do I find this ‘child-theme’ you mention
    do I go to cpanel..? or in my admin (dashboard)

    Also, I do not want to restrict ‘members’ viewing, only their ‘profiles’

    @pinhit

    Sorry but I haven’t got a clue what a conditional query is..or a wrap around for that matter,
    before I get told off again, tell me, is there a help section for newbies here that do NOT understand code and anything associate with it? because up until now everyone that replies to me ‘assumes’ that I’m some sort of computer whiz kid that totally gets what all of this code ‘jargon means’..NOT lol

    For the record I did do a ‘search’ for this issue, and a lot of the posts relating to my query are like a year old.

    I’ve tried adjusting the settings in my admin area to restrict commenting to members only..alas there is no setting to restrict the viewing of members profiles in a similar fashion.

    For the record I did actually try using a profile privacy plugin..but it did not work properly.

    thanks

    yeh George I too would like to know where to place that code tweek that nit3watch mentioned, I’m trying to keep my members profiles from being viewed by the public and tried with no avail to find where to write that edit.

    @naijaping.. child theme? i dunno
    im using buddypress default if thats what you mean

    @hnla yes it’s my site, and sorry for double post, where do i go to change the relevant files in cpanel ?

    @odiseo i really only wanna change those two words ‘what’s new’ and ‘site activity’ here: http://www.londonbbmpinswap.co.uk/

    @pinhit

    @r-a-y, i read that codex..how do i get to: ‘Open the POT file from the /plugins/buddypress/bp-languages folder in your BuddyPress install’?

    @pinhit

    thanks for the reply. but my god what a pain in the arse lol

    these edits are not very ‘user friendly’ are they, everything’s so long and drawn out

    One would imagine that editing two words in a website would not involve studying for a phd in brain-surgery , changing, languages?, re-wording everything else but whats originally intended? why do I have to go to such lengths to change 2 words ?

    I don’t know anything about code and all of these tips and hints are doing nothing but flying way over my head.

    the last time I had a go at using some code in my site it went ape-do do, so unless someone explains to me where to put these things i’m all out of luck I guess

    ok i went here in my admin area: BuddyPress Default: Main Index Template (index.php)
    and could only find this line: `

    `
    am I in the right area?

    thanks

    ideally i would like to able to at least ‘have a go’ at editing myself..my biggest hurdle is finding exactly ‘where’ to make these edits and always get confused between editing in admin area in buddypress and on the cpanel server-side,

    @Virtuali where exactly can i find my current theme’s ‘activity/index.php’ ?

    @r-a-y looks too complex for me but thanks for replying. I’m an absolute beginner with code I’m afraid.

    hi i need to filter out all accept for what new members post in ‘whats new’ too but
    im a total nubie to code, would anyone be kind enough to spare a few moments explaining where exactly to place the code in cpanel

    many thanx ;)
