BP-Media appears to be correctly processing the images and writing the URL for the stored image to the database. This problem is likely being caused by:

1) Something wrong with your .htaccess file
2) Something wrong with your directory permissions

Actually, the fix even works for MU sites, unless you are using a different subdomain for each user. It will work for www.mysite.com/username/etc but not for http://www.username.mysite.com .

How is your MU install set up?
