<p>#1 would have been searching the forum archives for possible solutions from past threads (one of great benefits of forums are ever increasing db of information and help derived from questions &amp; replies)</p>

If your group is set to Private then the Group Forum created via <a href="http://codex.buddypress.org/user/setting-up-a-new-installation/installing-group-and-sitewide-forums/" rel="nofollow ugc">http://codex.buddypress.org/user/setting-up-a-new-installation/installing-group-and-sitewide-forums/</a> should be private as well. So the question is, how did you set up your forum for that group?</p>
