what i have done is create an htaccess.txt file and paste the below content in it

sometimes when you copy items from a folder on harddrive to server via ftp program it misses hidden files like .htaccess

You can create a file htaccess.txt add the rewrite code then upload it after upload change the name of the file to .htaccess
