ParticipantI don’t want to confuse buddypress with the various microblogging tools (twitter, laconica, etc.) but Openmicroblogger.org has taken the Twitter Tools for WordPress plugin, for example, and made it work with their platform so that you can post to Twitter from within Openmicroblogger (much like how it works wth WordPress).
More importantly, the OMB platform lets you ‘subscribe’ to your Twitter friends or other users so that their tweets complete with Gravatar can appear in your stream on the OMB network of servers. Having this ability to ‘pull’ your subscribed network of users, over and above a lifestream of your own tweets or whathaveyou, whould make the ‘social’ plugin in Buddypress even more powerful. Hope I explained this in some manner of clarity.
Cheers

ParticipantScotm, this might be possible. I’ll look into it. I’m more interested in the BuddyPress then “reinventing the wheel” on a lifestream or social plugin. Those have been done, and i’m still looking over the more popular ones to see if we can convert those WordPress plugins into BP. But I’ve got a feeling writing something custom is going to be alot more useful and unlimiting.

ParticipantSome had an issue downloading the file from the blog. Here is a confirmed working link, just in case you tried but failed and were so pissed you didn’t leave a blog comment.

Here is the code: http://davidbisset.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/bp-social.txt

ParticipantAdding a new menu item to the member theme, NOT the top bar. I did this with my recent example of “social” (view the screenshots):
http://www.davidbisset.com/2008/12/23/buddypress-adding-twitter-and-friendfeed/
This is a clean slate version of that above, if that makes sense.
EDIT: Duh. This actually DOES BOTH. This will add the same menu item in “my account” WITH submenu navigation in the grey “BuddyPress” bar that is present on the top page when you login.

Moderator@nicolagreco, I can’t sign up on http://buddypressdev.org/. Everything is ok, until I need to get the email with my password. There’s no email for 30 hpurs already. What should I do? I’m very interested in this project.

ParticipantOooh Nicola. It’s not good to push ‘send’ without thinking. There are always consequences for our actions. We’ll just have to come up with an appropriate punishment for your thoughtless behavior.
In the meantime I moved it.

ParticipantDavid – Love where you’re heading with this. When you say “menu” do you mean Admin bar or the Home/Blog/Members/Etc menus in the BP header. I hacked the latter but would much rather do it thru a plugin such as you’ve developed

ParticipantDavid,
“…minimum required to give you the ability to add a new menu item…”
You talking about adding a new menu item to the buddybar ™
or to the user/options bar in the member theme?

This may not be possible, but it might be nice to include users of Identi.ca (and Laconica servers) plus Openmicroblogger.org servers in this stream. Both use the OpenMicroBlogging protocol enabling users to post to Twitter and subscribe to friends on each platform.
Openmicroblogger.org in particular is heavily tied to WordPress plugins and themes already.

ParticipantThe “my-plugins” folder is actually based off the root of your forum install. If it is /forums/ then you would have /forums/my-plugins/ for the folder.
The real trouble with getting the forums side working is that it makes the assumption that you have WPMU and bbPress installed 100% and integrated properly even before you start trying to get the buddypress side going. Always make sure the logins are integrated and working right before you continue on.
Biegun also has a point as well. Buddypress accesses bbPress through publically accessible xmlrpc.php and if you put .htaccess in there for password protection, it will break as well since it won’t be able to access the installation.
slaFFik I would just suggest that if you reinstall WPMU 2.7, you also restart on bbPress 1.0 alpha 4 from scratch as well and then integrate the installs off the installation of bbPress and just go through all the steps again without having a bit more information.

ParticipantHello buddys,
I would just like to say that I am very impressed, not only with BP but also the friendly and helpful people involved.
I have integrated googles Friend-Connect with http://www.blogfred.com perhaps it could confuse some people as there would then be “”2″” communities on my site!!
Umm!
Still very early days for me as I have a busy life elsewhere.

MemberRight.. but that Widget is showing the correct url for all the users. like http://sitename.com/network/members/Joorgeta/
But in one users name is showing like this :
http://sitename.com/network/members/amitasree%20bhattacharya/
Now.. my question is.. If BuddyPress doesn’t support any WordPress MU widgets then why on the home page we see the links “Click to add widgets on this space” ?
Regards

ParticipantI love Viper’s plugin and run it on my non WPMU installs. Personally though, for my buddypress installation which is really focused on more Social and less blogging, I am happy with the normal BP admin bar. My thoughts are that someone comes up with a plugin to add the “extra” functionality to the BP admin bar, not merging it. Just my 2 cents

ParticipantI know nothing about Facebook’s API or stream. If someone wants to be kind and gather a list of lean/small PHP classes that already grabs the info (I already have Twitter and Friendfeed) that would be great. Especially for Flickr and/or Twitpics.
