404 for groups

    Hi

I got so far as I could running on a local host, and am now running on a live server, installing from the combo download. Install went aok, and so far so good in terms of basic things working, (creating members, uploading avatars, creating blogs, making friends etc).

Main problem though is with Groups – the main tab for Groups, and also calling it from the top admin bar, brings up a 404 not found error. I can see all the appropriate files on the server, permissions appear to be right, so I’m a bit confused as to why this one bit isn’t co-operating. I looked at it last night, had a good night’s sleep, and am now looking at it again.

I can see that a table for groups has been created in sql, but is empty.

    What does this suggest?

    M

You are viewing the groups directory? The one labeled ‘Groups Directory’ with the ‘abcdef..’ and the search box. If the directory is displaying but you get 404 for the title. Or ‘not found’ as the title. Something like that then that’s fixable easy.

The 404 result for directories is a known issue. The workaround is to create a blank page with the slug ‘groups’ in wpmu. Do the same for the other directories. You’ll wind up with three placeholder pages.

    groups

    blogs

Credit to wardeh again for the solution.

No – not even getting that.

From the home page, choosing the horizontal tab link for Groups simply presents a 404 not found, as does My Account-Groups.

hi – back from doing some of hat ‘socialising’ stuff

I’ve been into wp-admin and created 3x pages and changed the slugs as per the suggestion, but this hasn’t improved matters.

Howdy. Did you do any mods to .htaccess? Is this problem just groups?

no, I haven’t been near .htaccess at all.

all the other tabs are working fine. The only thing that went different on this install on the live server compared to the local server was that on the live server I had made a change to a home.php file just by way of experimentation when it was just running wpmu, which meant that when i installed bp it didn’t at first display the bp theme properly. But returning the home.php file to its original state fixed that.

Slightly improved at present – instead of a 404, I’m now getting presented with a blank page whose html consists of

    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN”>

    <HTML><HEAD>

    <META http-equiv=Content-Type content=”text/html; charset=utf-8″></HEAD>

    <BODY></BODY></HTML>

@burtadsit : just wondering if you have any more thoughts on this? Does the fact that the other areas (news/members/blogs/) are all working fine rule out certain things (eg that it can’t be .htaccess)?

What would you recommend as a next step? Uploading all the files again?

    quick update

I created the blank pages with slugs as per previous message in wp-admin. I see now that if I view page in wp-admin then the pages with slugs mydomain.com/members and mydomain.com/blogs works fine, but mydomain.com/groups again shows blank

When I was sysadmin for a company and had to play hardware weasel, I always knew it was a cable problem. That’s where I started and 99% time it got solved. Now I start with the error logs. What do the error logs say?

That skeleton html page is getting sent from somewhere. Where is it coming from before bp hooks that uri? Or what is bp sending after it hooks it?

the main error log I’m seeing from CPanel is only showing repeated calls for a background.gif image in one of the themes, which I can’t imagine can be related.

just going to try and get a look at the access log..

I just did a search on all of mu and bp and nothing contains ‘DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional’. I don’t think that’s coming from mu or bp. What plugins do you have running in /mu-plugins and /plugins? Disable all and try again.

That is a suspiciously blank html file. Normally an error gets you nothing or part of the page.

You can access all other group type functions. ‘my account’ groups etc..? Re-upload the dir /mu-plugins/bp-groups

    (thrashing around aimlessly here)

I’ve got nothing in that didn’t come with the initial wpmu install. Having installed that I just set up a couple of users, and a couple of blogs, then proceeded to install bp.

I’ve now looked at the access log, but all that is listing is the gif jps css and js requests, as opposed to the pages themselves. Is this normal?

But nothing about the groups is working – other than the tab in wpadmin, wherever there is a call to a group function, the blank page comes up. eg on the main tabs, on the admin bar, if you’re on your own profiel page and choose groups etc…

Sorry to leave ya now but I’ve gotta get some sleep. Been going too long and not thinking straight. Somebody fresher than I will see this thread and lend a hand. It’s probably something simple and we’re too close to the problem.

I’ll check back after a nap. That’s all I get these days is naps. :)

thanks for all your help so far. it is much appreciated.

that 404 text is showing up on google as perhaps being something to do with PHP.

Google? Now I’m really lost. What does google have to do with this?

I meant that I had googled the 404 error text, and the hits for blank html with that code tended to be relating to PHP. Also further googling suggested a similar White Screen of Death for wpmu, with various fixes (one was removing trailing blank spaces after the final > of a php page).

I’m at the office now, going to show people here the work done to date. Next chance I get I’ll prolly reboot the server, reload files, and finally re-install, but that may not be until Thursday.

Thanks for the help. (nb there’s a guy posting with problems on his site (iqcuties) who runs on the same webhost as me, who is having problems. just wonder if there is some server config or something not right.

Just having a quick peek at the access logs and AWSTATS on the webhost. The access logs aren’t particularly helpful as I can set the GET command for /groups, and the 404 being returned, but nothing else useful.

The only thing that leaps out on the webserver’s awstats analyser is that all the 404s being returned for /groups are down as being referred from http://www.mydomain.com/blogs and I’m not sure why /blogs as the calls are being from many other pages and not just the /blogs page.

Had a week’s rest from bp, ftped the latest trunk files across, and it’s working fine now.
