500 Internal Server error on installation

Tried installing Buddypress on a server that I am already running wordpress on with no problems at all. But when I install the plugin I get a 500 Internal Server error and the site is broken. The only way I can recover the site is if I delete the Buddypress plugin folder via FTP.

I have installed Buddypress on another server and it runs fine and I don’t get this error at all and everything is fine.

Can anybody suggest why I am having this problem?

What if anything do your logs say?

Instead of deleting the plugin directory just try renaming it.

Do you mean the server logs? I don’t have access to them easily.

What if I turn error reporting on in the config file?
