Activity not working (for users setup in WPMU)

users registered through buddypress = no problem (activity, profile, blogs…all working)
But, users added through WPMU (dashboard / site admin / users / add user) …are NOT working
When I add new users through WPMU….the user DOES get added, and I CAN see them in the “members” list, and they can login post, comment, etc….but….
When that user (who was added in WPMU only) does any activity… that does not display on their “activity” list (or blogs, etc)
is this a bug?
is there an easy fix?
