Announcing: Events component

  • Erwin Gerrits

    @egerrits

    Tomorrow, the first version of my bp_events component will be available from my website (http://www.erwingerrits.com/?page_id=799).

    This component will allow your users to create (recurring) events, with optional forum and wire, to which friends can be invited. Friends can either: attend, maybe attend or not attend, much like Facebook’s Events. There will be a ‘Send a Reminder’ option as well.

    The component includes an “Events” widget that lists the upcoming (default), newest, active or popular events.

    You can keep up to date on the development, and add comments with suggestions or bug reports on my website, or on this thread.

    And events for groups.

    Nice work anyway..

    A suggestion for event plugin. The ability for users to use Eventbrite helps businesses and organizations of all sizes manage, promote and sell-out their events.

    This would be great to event app which is a killer.

    For those interested: version 0.54 of bp-events is now available from my website at http://www.erwingerrits.com/?page_id=799

    As usual, read the website or ReadMe file for what’s included (and what’s not!)

    Hey Erwin… looks like the plugin is SO popular that demad has crashed your site ;-) (Getting a cPanel installation success message). I’ll flick this to you in an email too.

    Update: Scratch that… it’s back… that’ll teach me to be too eager (again!) ;-)

    Simon, I’d think you would have learned by now =)

    Last week I moved my websites over to a new server running PHP5 (old one was on PHP4) and eventhough the switch over went smoothly, there are a few nagging issues with SSL certificates and registered softwares that do not like being moved from one server to another… My appologies for this inconvenience to everyone.

    is this plugin in working with the latest trunk???

    i see from your site @Egerrits that the latest version will not but is bp-events 0.54 workin?

    Erwin Gerrits
    Participant

    @egerrits

    0.54 will work with latest trunk, so will future versions… I went back to .54 and re-traced my steps to 0.55… all is peachy :-)

    @Timothy, I believe Erwin is currently battling with the recently updated group template directory structure changes and thus 0.54 does not work fully with the trunk version of BuddyPress. 0.55 will work with trunk build but there is no eta yet.

    I stand corrected (and should learn to type faster ;-)

    Egerrits: can you submit this to the WP plugin repo so it will show up on the BuddyPress site?

    This is a fast world, Simon… I found out it was easier for me to go back a version and retrace my modifications for next version rather than trying to figure out why the style sheets weren’t loading any more… I almost have it back to the .55 functionality I had before. Lost a week, but hey, version .55 is just around the corner, and it will have fully functioning group events!

    Andy, yes I will upload it to WordPress shortly. I was working on the directory view when you decided to complete change that =P… I fixed up the ReadMe file to conform with WordPress, so I will start with uploading .55 sometime next week.

    GREAT NEWS Erwin. Really appreciate all your hard work. I think this feature will definitely DEFINITELY help motivate more group activity, etc.

    This sounds like a wonderful function! I’m using the latest trunk, and I’ll be waiting for the .55 release!

    I just upgraded to the latest trunk. When trying to create or change an event I get this saving error:

    \”There was an error saving event details. Please try again.\”

    Does anybody know if this has to do with the trunk? Or are there known solutions?

    In any case: GREAT PLUGIN! It is of so much use to me!

    @egerrits

    Just released version .55 of bp-Events plugin on my website (see first post in this thread for the address). If it tests positively (ie. it DOES work with latest trunk properly) I will upload it to WordPress plugins (and BuddyPress’s) later today.

    Version .55 has some bug fixes, some CSS fixes and profile birthday event integration as well as group events, which was a popular request.

    Just gave it a try with the newest trunk and still experience two errors:

    1 – When saving changes in an existing or saving a new event: “There was an error saving event details. Please try again.”

    2 – When trying to view existing events: “Sorry, the event does not exist.” (http://dev.q-tipp.org/buddypress/events/cafe-bukarest)

    Make sure the “description” field is filled in when editing existing events — I haven’t found out yet why the description field is not filled in with whatever was in that field when editing an event — it’ll be blank, and so being a required field, will give an error trying to save it with a blank value. Can someone figure out WHY the description isn’t being put into the edit-settings screen? (That’s in events-admin.php in the members template folder — calls bp_event_description() which SHOULD work returning the description….)

    Erwin, first of all, thanks for all of your hard work on the plugin!

    I uploaded events version .55 into a fresh install of MU with the latest BP trunk.

    I was able to save the events correctly. I’m also able to see the events in the widgets.

    But I have 2 Issues:

    1) Directory – There is no ‘events’ folder under /bp-themes/buddypress-member/directories. So, when I select Events on the navigation tab to display the events directory, it defaults to ‘members’ and doesn’t display anything but the sidebar.

    2) When I go to the events detail page (by selecting from the widget), It has the correct url and displays the blog sidebar, however… no details show. I have reread your instructions about 23 times :) and think I have everything correctly. Does this sound familiar? I thought it was with member themes, but everything looks good.

    Thanks

    @egerrits

    @Auwagner,

    The events-directories php file should be in the old (pre-1303 trunk) style setup, in bp-events->directories, rather than in the new members theme directories folder. I hope to change this in the next version, when I catch up with the trunk changes.

    What is your website URL so I can take a look? Your second problem I have not seen yet, so it’s hard to comment.

    Admins and non admins can access to event settings option, where you have to put your map APIs.

    Could this option be limited to admins only?

    @takuya

    I’d like to translate this into Japanese… when do you plan to create .pot files for this plugin?

    zeitweise

    @zeitweise

    @ Erwin

    All fields were filled in. I reinstalled both Buddypress to the newest trunk and the events plugin v 0.55. The saving error remains. I cannot create events.

    Could this be a permission issue? bp-events-directory and bp-events.php are set to 755. Are there other adjustments I need to make?

    Erwin Gerrits

    @egerrits

    @zeitweise… I forget if I asked you this before… it seems your database didn’t get upgraded to include the new fields for version .55. Now, with the new “plugins” directory switch and activation, I don’t know WHEN the upgrade database code gets executed… my guess is at activation… Did you deactivate and reactivate the plugin, as well as maybe going to the Admin->Events in the backend (that USED TO upgrade the database)… It just sounds your database is out of sync with the plugin code.

    Version 0.56 is now on my website. It (finally) fixes the annoying bug that gave some people a “page not found” error. http://erwingerrits.com
