Bit confused about BP aggregation

    @voopress

I have a WPMU 3.5 and the latest BP running.

What I need is a network plugin or method, by which to automatically post updates to twitter, facebook and other sites, when new posts and other items are updated but network wide.

One thing that is not clear to me is that some people talk about BP automatically aggregating all content from all blogs but I’ve yet to find anything describing this.

Can someone please shed some light on this.

If you have site tracking checked in the BuddyPress settings blog posts will get posted to the activity stream. This does not post to Twitter. Posting to Twitter from many sites on a WP install requires you to activate a Twitter posting plugin on every site. There is no specific BuddyPress plugin. A plugin could be created to hook into the activity stream and send Tweets when a blog post gets added to the activity stream.

I do have this option enabled but new posts or summaries aren’t showing up in BP activities.
I supposed there might be a plugin or some code out there to auto post activities to certain sites, I’ve seen it for joomla. Have not seen this for BP yet.

    Thanks.

Is there perhaps another setting I should check? I have not found anything obvious so far.

Site/Blog Tracking – aggregates posts and comments from all subsites of a multisite installation https://codex.buddypress.org/user/setting-up-a-new-installation/configure-buddypress-components/#settings-buddypress-components

I do have this option enabled but new posts or summaries aren’t showing up in BP activities.

Check each subsite’s Settings > Reading and make sure that on Search Engine Visibility, you did not check “Discourage search engines from indexing this site”. If it is checked, the posts/comments on that subsite will not show up in the Activity Stream.

    All sites allow search engines.
One thing about aggregation is that I read that doing it in certain ways can bog the server down thanks to loops. I’m assuming that using BP’s built in method would not cause this.

You have no other knowledge you can share on this?

@voopress Did you activate BuddyPress in Network Admin? It must be activated sitewide. Is BP installed in main site or in subsite? Site URI?

BP and all of it’s plugins are installed from the network but only activated on the main site.

I’m not sure which thread to update now :).

I enabled them all and tested and didn’t see much difference so put them all back on the main site only other then BP which is network.

@voopress There are some BP-compatible plugins which must be activated sitewide and there are those which could be activated in the BP site only.

For example, BP gallery/media plugins must be activated network-wide so that whatever is uploaded in BP site can be retrieved in member blog sites via shortcode/s. A BP group plugin on the other hand, could just be activated in only the BP site. So check the plugin documentation to be clear if it must be activated sitewide or can be activated in the BP site only.

I guess it really boils down to how someone wants to use their system and arrange the plugins as needed for your setup.
While plugin details does most often mention if the plugin is network or not, it’s not always clear what the benefits are or how they could cause problems with your desired type of setup.

Since I’ve not seen BPGallery in use yet, I don’t know if I should enable it sitewide or not since this doesn’t tell me if folks would be sharing each others pics for their blogs or something else.
    I’ll do more testing.

Thanks very much for the input.
