buddypress nav and sub nav widgets?

I don’t know if I could even implement this with help, but here goes. If I start adding extra functions from like buddypress links, group documents, bp-albums, buddypress scholarpress courseware, etc to buddypress. The number profile and group navigation tabs and sub-nav grows to the point where there are a considerable number of clicks to get where you want to go. I know that users (students) could use the adminbar, but for many users (especially young ones) this is not a good solution when they are first learning about a site.

To make the navigation easier and more colourful, would it be possible to change the nav items from tabs to widgets or hard coded blocks that had a short summary of the activity or options in each section with graphic as a visual hint of what each was about. Of course there are widgets for “Most Recent Activity” and “Recent Users”, and “Groups”, but these only provide a listing, they don’t give a view of what is in each section.

For the core functions like Groups or My Groups where would I begin to look for the hooks, functions to do this? Another approach is to ask if the tabs could be converted to jQuery UI tabs for faster loading once the user was on the groups page for example.

I know this is an open question, but after looking around I can’t seem to find anything related to this and I don’t know where to start. Thanks for any help.
