Hey Ive just set up WordPress and Buddypress with no plugins and everything default and everything is up to date. http://dogwalkuk.com It seems to be running very slowly it is hosted with reg123 on their unlimited package. Is it because reg123 are bad for hosting or is it something to do with Buddypress settings?
    Thanks Jonny!

  • idk anything about your host but if you have shared hosting expecting lightning fast performance with buddypress is probably wishful thinking. there are a lot of factors in determining the ultimate speed of your site but just bear in mind that buddypress has a lot of functionality on top of wordpress itself which also has a lot of functionality. compared to static sets there is a lot going on under the hood, if you have a lot of plugins or high traffic it would be advisable to have a vps or specialized wordpress hosting.

Ok I’m thinking of moving the site to a VPS server can you recommend one? Also what spec of a VPS server would handle buddypress well?

it really just depends on a lot of things. if you get a lot of traffic you will probably need something scalable.

Would it be difficult to set up my own home server?

i don’t think that would make much sense to begin with, personally.

    why not?

running any kind of web server from your home is not something that makes sense to me let alone a wordpress or buddypress site.

    why not? Can you explain?

the list of reasons why i wouldn’t do that is literally endless, but to name a few from the top, uptime, bandwidth and security.
