If you’re using bbPress 2.2.2 and BuddyPress, the preferred method going forward is to disable the “Discussion Forums” component in BuddyPress and use bbPress to handle group forums.

    Try reading this guide:
    https://codex.buddypress.org/buddypress-site-administration/migrating-from-old-forums-to-bbpress-2/

And let us know if you have any questions or if the guide isn’t clear.

I tried clicking on the link but the link not working. I get the following message:

The website encountered an error while retrieving https://codex.buddypress.org/buddypress-site-administration/migrating-from-old-forums-to-bbpress-2/. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly.

The link is working fine for me.

I cannot get the link to open in Chrome. But it does open in IE. I have seen those instructions before. But in step 4 the screen capture shows 3 options under bbPress. It shows “Settings”, “Deactivate” and “Edit”. I do not have those options. I have “Network Deactivate” and “Edit”.

I just tried a completely fresh install with the default WordPress theme and then the default BuddyPress theme. It is still not working. In this install, I can’t even get the Forums menu to show up on the menu bar.

This is getting more than a little frustrating. I am really trying to understand this process, but it is thus far not intuitive, nor do the menus and setup options look like they do in the documentation.

Does anyone have any updates or suggestions to resolve the forums issue?

    Hi there!

    I need some professional support.

I have put 50 + hours into buddypress and the current theme I am using for a new website (Salutation) and have come to the end of my tether.

I cannot get this working myself. (the website is http://www.tigressyogateachers.com)

Can you please point me in the direction for where I can find some professional help? All of the problems are centred around getting the forum working correctly and someone who is familiar with Buddypress will certainly be able to help me – quite easily I imagine!

Thank you so much and I’m looking forward to your response as soon as possible!

    🙂

    beingblissful,

I have been waiting on a response for several days myself. I am about to invest in the Salutation theme and use it on a new site I am launching. But, like you, I really want to utilize forums. If you are having trouble, it does not bode well for me either.

Other than the forums not working, what do you think of the salutation theme?

    Hi Kevin,

I wish I could recommend Salutation theme but alas I cannot.

I am very comfortable with WordPress and have been designing websites from purchased themes for several years now and this was my first venture into the world of forums.

The theme itself looks awesome – the main problem is the work I had to do to get the theme looking exactly like the demo – when first installed, Salutation does not communicate cleanly with WordPress so it comes out jumbled with static blocks all over the place. The work I had to put to figure out how to get it to look exactly like the demo alone was astronomical (and the demo was why I bought it).

The support available was very basic. I would ask a lot of questions and be given half an answer – frustrating and very time-consuming. I could not figure out how to work it out myself – a very unintuitive theme.

The videos are excellent and I did find some help there but here I sit… 50+ hours later with a beautiful website that does not work because I can’t get Buddypress to play nicely with Saluation… Hence, my request here for some professional assistance.

    Hope this helps, Kevin!

    🙂

@beingblissful Hi, I don’t think many people saw your message, since you posted in the middle of someone else’s thread. It might be a good idea to start your own topic, and let us know what you’re having trouble with.

@beingblissful I would like to chat with you about your experience with Salutation. I am about to purchase it and institute forums and migrate an existing blog to a new domain that I purchased. I was really drawn to Salutation because of the look of it and the video tutorials make it look so easy. My problem is that I have not been able to get forums to work at all as described in WordPress or BuddyPress documentation. I would like to chat with you if you have time. If you do, please email me your contact info privately and I will reach out to you. My email address is kevin.bowser@live.com.

I tried to send you this as a direct message, but to no avail. Maybe I am just not destined to use BuddyPress???

    Thanks,

    Kevin

The link to the codex article I provided does not have any screenshots.

I can’t even get the Forums menu to show up on the menu bar.

This is a bbPress issue.  You have to create your own page for Forums.  When you create a new page, make sure to add one of the bbPress shortcodes to display what you want (you’ll probably want to use [bbp-forum-index]).  Then, add your page to your theme’s custom menu.

    r-a-y,

Thanks for the input. I “sorta” have it working. But it is not working like I have seen it working on other sites. So, I am still concerned about the ability to roll it out on my new blog in a few weeks when it is ready.

Do you have any experience with the “Salutation” theme that @beingblissful is utilizing? I am contemplating purchasing that one.

I do not have experience with the Salutation theme; I would ask the theme developer if they’ve added specific bbPress styling / templating to the theme.

But according to beingblissful, the theme is hard to work with.

    Hi Paul,

Thanks for the tip about starting a new topic for my post – will do now and include the specifics of what I need help with 🙂

    Hi Kevin,

Not really comfortable to chat personally at this point. In fact, not really comfortable to publicly bag Salutation theme either!  First time ever for me to speak so negatively about something I invested in online.

Certainly some people have managed to get the theme working well so for those who have good understanding of Buddypress and BB Press, it’s an excellent option. There are just a lot of holes that need to be filled in for newbies and the support forum available through Salutation leaves much to be desired for the total beginner.

Yes, the video tutorials are great! And I did find much help there. However, once again, it’s assumed that you already have a thorough understanding of Buddypress and how it works. I don’t so was often left feeling confused and uncertain about to create exactly what I want.

One more thing on Salutation – I originally contacted their theme support via email to request professional support – almost 2 weeks ago. I got one email response back 5 days later saying they would pass it on. I have heard nothing from them since hence me posting for professional support here at Buddypress 🙂

I wish you much luck, Kevin! I’m sure that you’ll find the perfect solution very soon 🙂

@beingblissful I understand. Thanks for your encouragement. I was able to get it working to some degree. We will see how it goes from here. I will keep researching and see what other templates might prove to be the right solution for my blog.
