How can I filter posts by categories in activity stream?

I can’t find any information about how I could filter posts by categories in activity stream.
Ideally I would like to have checkboxes allowing to select the filtering categories.
If not possible easily, where shall I modify the code in order to introduce the filtering with hard coded category names?Thanks for your help!
