How to allow guest access to groups/forums
We have installed BP 1.6.2, and further installed Forums for Groups. As of now, access to Groups / Forums is possible only to members. We would like to be able to provide access to non-members of the site as well, at least for reading the content of the topics in various groups / forums. Can this functionality be achieved? The site in question is http://psychotherapyandcounseling.org.
Thanks in advance.
Sorry to bump up this thread, but I would like advice from the BP gurus on accessing forum posts without the need to log into the site with a username/password. Currently, whenever the URL of a forum post is given in any public site such as Twitter, you are redirected to the log in / account-creation page. For example, here is an example of a forum post that a user wanted to provide URL of, but couldn’t:
This is not default behaviour, you must have third party plugins at work, as I can’t see any groups listing. If you have added plugins you need to be aware of how they will affect your site, if you haven’t got plugins doing a walled garden sort of privacy management then you have something odd going on.
The BP-centric plugins installed are “BuddyPress Registration Options” and “BuddyPress Login Redirect”. Might they be disallowing public access to the forums/groups? How to disable the disallowing feature?
This problem was solved, as follows:
1. Disable “BuddyPress Registration Options” plugin.
2. In Settings >> General >> New User Default Role, set to “Blocked”, or some appropriate value to make spam registration difficult.
Thanks to Hugo for pointing to the solution.
yeah that would be a really bad setting i think.
Thank you for the response.
With the settings I made, the groups and forums are now publicly accessible on the internet, and may also get indexed with time.
Request you to suggest an alternative arrangement.
anything which is publicly visible is also by definition indexable. Even with no follow and no index meta information embedded on the page there is no guarantee you won’t be indexed.
Thank you for the insight given.
I also await advice on how to be able to continue using the “BuddyPress Registration Options” plugin – it is currently disabled because it was not allowing the public to access/read the groups/forums of the site.
not familiar with that plugin what functionality is it providing you?
Documentation for the plugin may be read here: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-registration-options/.
