How to AutoActivate member blog by user name and retrofit old members with blog?

Anyone have a line on how to auto activate a member blog for a new user and use their username as the name.sitename? instead of using the form click box to choose….

Also, how to retrofit legacy members with a blog…something for db or maybe there’s a plugin perhaps that can answer both my questions.

Will search the forums a little more…just wanted to throw it out there quickly to see if someone could help.

Are you running WPMU? If not, you can’t provide blogs for users.

It’s built into WPMU so all you need to do is enable the option to create a blog for new users.

@jivany oh yea wpmu. so all i need to do is turn on the create a blog option and all my members will automatically have blogs….and they’ll have non-editable username domains? Sounds too good to be true.

my questions were more for getting legacy members outfitted with blogs after the fact. I don’t want to turn on the create a blog option just yet, i’m actually working towards bundling the option into 1. User signs up and they auto have a blog with their user name as their domain. I know i could remove the “just a username” button leaving the gimme a blog and that I think auto gives the user a blog with username as domain. that’s all good…

I’m refering to mass editing all those older members to give them blogs, without having to do it 1×1 or asking them to do it. there’s a couple of premium plugins that sound my do the trick but I just don’t know if they create blogs for existing members.

I’ve been to the mu forums…just trying to see if anyone here has tried something like this.

Why do you want to force blogs on your users? Give them the choice. Some people, don’t want yet another blog (like me for example – I never create new blogs on each WPMU/BP site I go to)

hm. don’t really see it as forcing a blog on a user if the intent of the site is to have a blog? The intent for sites like tumblr, posterous is to have a blog come standard, the user knows that. You have to remember not all sites using wpmu/bp are the standard default blog setup you are thinking of. I can see why you would say that, I wouldn’t create new blogs either..but the intent here is building a website that revolves around niche blogging…so users know what they are getting from get go. hmm. think again of posterous, tumblr, you get a blog at signup not to choice to create a blog or not. it just comes standard. user chooses to use it or not afterwards.

Let me put it another way simply. Trying to take an already existing wp blog (by wp blog I mean being used as cms not a blog) with members and converting it to a wpmu/bp site. Now i’d like to retrofit those members with blogs, a bulk edit.

So, your question is really a WPMU question. You should try asking the question on a WPMU support site as it will likely get more response than here.

As for the blog thing – you currently have users with no blogs. If you create a new blog for every user then what default content are you going to put on that blog for the users who have no interest in the blog? Are you going to leave the default Welcome to WP post with the comment from Mr WordPress? As a user, I’d be annoyed by that if there wasn’t some way for me to delete the blog. Oh, yeah, there is a way – don’t automatically create a blog for a user that’s not interested. ;)

But anyhoo, I assume you have asked your user base and this is what they all want so do what you need to do.

Did you ever figure out how to automatically create a blog for newly registered users? I’m looking to do the same thing.

I’m interested in doing the same thing as well on WP3. Have been roaming the internet for two days now and nothing has come up so far.

@mojoshaun, @oriste I have not figured this out yet, actually I stopped trying for a long time, I am about to begin my search again, I think there are some solutions now.

@jivany, a wpmu question indeed, but now that its all wp3-in-one, I’ll pose the question again here. Also, it’s not for the option of having a “blog” — remember everyone doesn’t use the multisite “blog” as a traditional blog in a blog network. I have other uses for the “site” for each user. My users aren’t necessarily aware that they are on a “blog network” so they don’t think in terms of blogging or having a blog etc. Each user “blog” is just a posting tool that is integrated into their profiles, much like FB notes. So I’m not too worried about anyone being annoyed because they could care less about what we call it in the forums or in the backend.
