New members creates pending frienship requests

Hi, new here.
Been using Buddypress for over a year. Since upgrading to 1.7 new registrations creates Pending friendship requests – as these are false requests the following error message comes up when accepting them – “There was a problem accepting that request. Please try again.”
The Pending requests tab shows “No pending requests”, but when clicking on it, the page loads and shows new members as requests.
Tried a few different themes incl (Mantra, and Buddypress social – WPMU).
Deactivated all buddypress related plugins, but the problem remains.
Any ideas?
