Open Use:

  • It occurs to me that there needs to be an open standard which allows users of one BuddyPress site to participate in another BuddyPress site without being registered on that site (a la an OpenID). Admin’s should have the ability to turn this feature on/off (making their site open or not).

This way, when everybody and their brother launches their own social network- i can use the one which suits me best, and my friends can use the one that suit them best- but I can still view all my friends across the various sites, access their profiles, and leave them comments.

  • One of the issues with this would be that spammers could create their own BP sites and gain access to hundreds of other sites.

That’s a good idea. Perhaps not fully open. Instead, let us confirm & permit some other buddypress site to allow their users participate in ours, creating a network of social networks.

After 1.0 at the end of the year there will be a lot of focus placed on how we can make BuddyPress as open and distributed as possible. There has been quite a bit of talk about open standards support, and this is something I’d really love to see working.

Before any of this can happen though, all the basic functionality you’d expect of a social network platform needs to be completed. You can’t run before you can walk, so to speak.
