Performing upgrade on live site

Asking this question in a new thread because it might be relevant to lot of members.

The upgrade instructions do not mention if the site should be taken offline while performing the upgrade.

I’m planning, I will temporarily password protect the public_html directory so that no one will be able to login to the site during the upgrade time.

Or is it ok to do the upgrade rightaway on the live site without taking any extra precautions to prevent the users from seeing white pages.

  • If you’re using it on a live site, best to take it down first and make sure you back up everything.

Take it down? That’s what I’m saying. How do I take the site down? Is there any option in wpmu?

Or shall I create a index.html with my outage message and drop it in the root directory of wpmu?

The index.html should work fine yes, I think there are plugins to do it though, there is another thread somewhere mentioning them.
