Restrict subgroup levels

  • flynn

    Hey David et al,
I was wondering if there was a way to:
    1. Restrict subgroups to 1 level deep. So subgroups can’t have subgroups, even if it’s just a trick like if is_subgroup remove the create subgroup menu item.
    2. Not display subgroups in the global BP groups listing

And two less important / hopefully quick questions:
    1. The last thing I was wondering about is, can people assign a parent group if they aren’t a member of that parent group? That is, if I am not a member of group X, when creating a group, will I have the option to select group X as a parent?
    2. Is there an easy way to not display subgroups in the “select parent group” drop down? (keeping with the idea that subgroups should only have 1 level).

    ~ Aaron

(if these changes are major we can offer some $ for development, email me aaron [at] wyodlc [dot] org)

    Hi Flynn,
I was wondering just that myself (i.e. restricting subgroups to one level). Did you solve the problem?

Any new information about this? I’m interested in doing the same thing.

We also can offer development payment

You should be able to restrict subgroups by setting each group so that “Nobody” can create subgroups. This is supposed to keep those groups out of the eligible parent group list and hide the “Create a Member Group” button for anyone except super admins.

If you have set up a group this way and it still shows up in a normal user’s drop down, let me know and I’d be happy to look into it.

I think the rest of these questions pre-date the permissions system (maybe?).

Unfortunately, I can’t accept payment, as this plugin is being developed primarily for a JerseyConnect project. I appreciate the offer, though! :)

Hi @ddean How can I hide the Subgroups from Group Listing + ActiveGroup/Popular Group? Also I want to only display the subgroups in a sidebar /widget or a static block how can I do it? Appreciate your help and advice.

    David Dean

@volpv – I’m not really sure that the “Group Listing + ActiveGroup/Popular Group” is but, if it is what I think it is, you’d have to modify some BuddyPress core files.

You can use the Group Navigator widget if you want to show subgroups of the displayed group. Let me know if that isn’t working for you!

Hi @ddean. Thank you for reply. Can I only show the subgroups of a particular Group on the Homepage. Currently when I use Group Navigator in the home page it shows only the top Groups. I want the show the subgroups instead. Also can the widget be parameterised, specifying specific top Groups(say which starts with “Group_” ?
    Appreciate your steer on this.
